Can’t Afford An Organic Mattress? Get A Natural Mattress Topper

Natural Mattress Topper

Organic mattresses are wonderful if you want to avoid the chemicals that regular mattresses are brimming with. But the price tag is often way too high for most budgets, especially if you have a family. The solution? A natural mattress topper.

Buying a new mattress can be expensive anyway, but if you are trying to steer clear of petrochemicals, formaldehyde, and other chemicals used in their manufacture then an organic mattress is what you want. New mattresses can off-gas these chemicals, which is evident in that ‘new mattress smell’ you detect. Thing is, even old conventional mattresses can cause problems. They may be too old to off-gas, but as they break down they can release chemicals into your lings and into the pores of your skin as you sleep.

A natural mattress topper will provide a layer of protection between you and your mattress. In fact, when used in conjunction with a mattress case, it is like you have a whole new bed!

A mattress case covers your entire mattress, and seals it. This will keep dust mites and other allergens locked away. You can get natural mattress cases, but they are pricey. A synthetic case provides a secure barrier, and a natural mattress topper keeps your skin away from the synthetic material.

Natural mattress toppers are made from a variety of materials, and there are advantages and disadvantages to them all.

Natural latex mattress toppers are thick, and very durable. Natural latex comes from the rubber tree, and can last you up to 20 years. There are synthetic and natural blends, so if you want all-natural be sure to read the packaging and make sure it is not a blend. Latex is hypoallergenic, and will not trap dust mites or other allergens. These toppers generally need to be used with a mattress cover, and are also more expensive than some other types, but the durability and comfort make the price well worth it in the long run.

There are also natural latex core mattress toppers, that are covered in either wool, cotton or a blend of both. These are the most comfortable, but also the most expensive. But if you only want to buy a natural mattress topper once, this is the best choice.

Wool, from sheep, alpacas or a blend, is often used in mattress toppers, and it is also a good all around choice. Wool is a natural insulator, and will keep you nice and cool in the summer but also niceĀ  and cozy warm in winter. Wool will wick moisture away from your body, and air pockets in the wool function as an insulating vacuum. Because wool dries quickly, it will not attract dust mites or other nasties, nor will it harbor mold. The drawback is that wool can become compacted over time, and start to feel hard. Usually, a good steam cleaning will puff the wool out again, so you retain that sleeping on a fluffy cloud feeling.

No need to shell out for a big ticket organic mattress, when a natural mattress topper will not only keep you separated from any chemical off-gassing but also extend the life, use and comfort of your old mattress…for a fraction of the cost.
